Edinburgh is great, with lots to see. We stayed in the old part, it was just magical. The place is steeped in history. You can walk anywhere in Edinburgh and see something interesting, it is a fascinating place, but wear comfortable shoes!
There’s a great tartan shop on the royal mile up near the castle, my one regret is that we didn’t get pictures wearing highland clothes, which would have been a great souvenir. We took a bus tour to Loch Ness; it was really disappointing because it only made five stops the entire trip. Next time we’ll rent a car and take our time. Nevertheless, we had a great time, Scotland is a wonderful place.
I would definitely recommend these three spots:
- Inverness, and the nearby Culloden battlefield. It is an amazing place, you can wander around and see the key sites, and visit the museum. I walked from Inverness, and the entire experience was unforgettable.
- Ft. William, with a wonderful museum. You can walk to (and around) Loch Ness, Ben Nevis (Scotland’s highest mountain, very pretty), and do a day trip to the coastal town of Oban. The most wonderful trip out of Ft. William I took was a bus trip to Glencoe, and then walking the length of the valley and across the hills. It was beautiful and also felt like a trip back in time.
- Isle of Skye You can take a hydrofoil or ferry to Skye, and it is very different from the highlands. I stayed in bed/breakfasts, and they were not expensive, but had great food and comfortable beds. I highly recommend it. Again, really beautiful, lovely walks, kind people.
