Vacation Rentals

If you are going to stay in one place for a while during your vacation, consider renting a house for an extended period of time. This will not only be much cheaper than staying in a hotel, it will make you more “local” and will enable you to develop friendships that will give you a deeper insight into the country. For economic reasons, it is most practical to rent a house if you have a family or are with friends you can share the rent with.

Check in with a local real estate office and ask them what they have available. It is not necessary to arrange your accommodations from home, as its better to see the place before you pay.

Avoid renting a place downtown, like in central Paris or Madrid. You can find much nicer places for half the price in the suburbs or in a nearby town. If you have any friends in the area, get them to arrange the deal. When you are a foreigner, there is bound to be a markup on the rent.

If you feel uncomfortable about arriving in a country and looking for a rental, there are some agencies online that offer international services for arranging rental accommodations.
