Ecuador
I just traveled to Ecuador. Cuenca is a beautiful city, by far the best in Ecuador. I was going to just stop for the night and move on the next day, but I liked it so much that I stayed an extra day. Colonial city, good accommodations regardless of your budget, and not too far from anywhere. While you’re down in Cuenca, check out Loja as well. A bit smaller than Cuenca, but a great place nonetheless.
Try to get out of Quito if you can. It is congested and was my least favorite area. You can travel with a tour group. We took an Amazon tour out of Banos. It was just us, a couple from England & a guy from Canada along with our guide. Everyone was great.
We also traveled to the Northern part of the country and stayed in a hacienda where we were very spoiled. I met great people from all over the world. You can take the bus or hire a private car. The buses are clean and comfortable but if you can negotiate a good price hire a private car.
From Quito to Banos about a 3 hr drive a private car only cost us both $30. I paid that for a 15 minute ride from the airport to the hotel in Miami.
You will love Ecuador. Great food & great people. I have been all over the world and it’s one of my favorite places.
