Exotic Destinations: Bahamas

The Bahamas Archipelago contains 29 big islands, 661 smaller islands and 2300 rocks spread in the area of North West Florida and Hispaniola Island. The Tropic of Cancer cuts this string of islands on the middle.

The islands are situated on a vast crystalline plateau. The Turks and Caicos Islands form an autonomic territory, being a part of Great Britain.

Between the Bahamas Islands, you can also find San Salvador, the island where Cristofor Columb disembarked on 12 October 1492. On this island, you can visit numerous historical monuments reminding of the greatest discoverer of the world, and also one of the strongest lighthouses of the world.

Because of the coral origin of the island, their altitude is small, having only a few meters above the level of the sea. The materials forming the islands allowed a simple surface relief, giving the aspect of a sponge filled with water.

The majority of islands are covered with smooth white sand, being a great advantage for the tourist activities. There are no rivers, but you can find numerous lakes on the edges of the islands. The lakes with sweet water can be rarely found, and it is supposed that those lakes were made by the locals to accumulate rain water.

The tropical climate is characterized by two different periods – a rainy season that lasts until October, and a dry period from October to May, with an average July temperature of 28 degrees Celsius.

The tourism represents the most important source of incomes. The most important tourist center is the city of Nassau, with worldwide recognized beaches, luxurious hotels, and an airport.

Some ports of the islands were rented by the Americans and they are used as Navy Bases. The islands gained their independence in 1973, after more than 300 years of English domination.
