Monterey Bay Area
The real gem up the California coast is the Monterey Bay area (about six hours drive from Los Angeles). There is a moratorium on development in the area, so though Carmel has designer shops, fine dining restaurants, and art galleries in the Carmel shopping district (Mission Street is the main drag), there is still a very quaint feel to the place.
Walking the streets of Carmel makes for a very charming afternoon. Visit the Carmel Mission (it has a museum section) to satisfy your cultural jones, or have afternoon tea for $18/person at the Cypress Inn, co-owned by Doris Day. The Cypress Inn is actually really lovely and romantic so stay there a night if you can.
In Monterey, visit Cannery Row and drive down Pacific Grove’s Ocean View Blvd. which hugs the coast of the bay. The houses are stunning (there is even a Frank Lloyd Wright on Ocean View!!!) and you’ll see deer calmly feeding off people’s lawns. You must take the 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach to see some of the most beautiful houses in the world. John Steinbeck (“The Grapes of Wrath” author) made the city of Salinas famous so you may want to check out the National Steinbeck Center.
