My trip to South Africa
I just spent 3 months in South Africa, including 2 weeks in Swaziland and Mozambique. You can figure out exactly what you want to do once you get there. Pretty much every hostel or place you stay in Cape Town has a travel desk and they are extremely helpful. I did an overland tour with a company called Nomad. They are very well organized and have numerous options of trips to take. You have optional activities and cover a lot of ground. You can cover Cape Town and surrounding areas with ease though.
I suggest driving down to Cape Point and around and then up the East Coast, called the “Garden Route”. If you can, go all the way up to Coffee Bay or even to Durban. Kruger National Park is also incredible. Also, Mozambique = unbelievable. Seriously, the beaches are amazing. They speak Portuguese, so if you have any knowledge of Spanish, it will help. If not, no need to worry.
You won’t need anything but the beach! Snorkeling is highly recommended!! It is suggested that you take malaria tablets. However, I did not feel the need to. The pills cause a lot of different side affects. If you use your bug spray with deet then you should be fine. Obviously, if you see them flying around, and are typically prone to getting bitten, you might want to reconsider. Also, you might want to get the pills when you get there. I had them before I left and found out that my particular kind didnt even work, which is another reason I didnt take them!
The visa thing isnt a big deal either. You can get a visa at the border of each country, you just have to pay. I don’t think I had to pay for Swazi, but it was about $25 for Mozambique. Oh and get money when you get there. Tell your bank and your debit/credit card is the easiest way to go. Besides South Africa, most of the countries accept US $ over their own. Hope this helps!
