Peru Alone as a Woman
I visited Peru for a couple of weeks alone, last March. It was probably one of my favorite vacations to date. I did Lima centro for a couple of days, and then stayed in Barranco for a couple more (this was not intentional — had weather trouble trying to fly to Cuzco — but I’m glad it happened and was a great time).
Then I flew up to Cuzco and spent some time there before hiking the Inca trail. I have limited Spanish, having only taken one year of Spanish classes back in grade school. However, I’m fluent in near French and currently studying Italian, so I found it pretty easy to pick up the language quickly. By the end of the trip I had no trouble communicating, but it was a bit touch and go in the beginning.
I stayed in youth hostels for the entire trip, and ended up meeting lots of great travellers, so I was rarely really travelling alone. Some of my best experiences in Peru were due to meeting fellow travellers in the hostels who somehow knew locals and therefore could go out to fun bars and restaurants and such off the tourist scene radar. However, Peru alone as a female is definitely not for the weak of heart. You have to be comfortable with catcalls, propositions, and sketchy men following you around. If you are okay dealing with this (I generally found that a few select swears, followed by complete ignoring of the guy, worked pretty well) then you should love the country.
