The Atlantis Resort, Bahamas
Just returned from the Bahamas. 13-hour trip one-way from SFO to Nassau. The Atlantis is very similar to a big Las Vegas Hotel but on the beach in the Bahamas. I believe there were 3000 people at the resort when I was there.
The rooms at the Atlantis range from ok to very nice. I had a room at the Beach Towers. It was clean and quiet at $300/night. Food and drink is very expensive. $15 for a burger. $21 for a pina colada. $21/ea for a breakfast buffet. $45/ea for their dinner buffet. Nobu and Mesa Grill will run you at least $100/person. If you can, try the Fish Fry area. Try Twin Brothers for some local food. Carmine’s and Antonio’s/Anthony’s at the Marina are also good places to eat just a few minutes walk from the resort. 15% gratuity is automatically charged to everything at the resort. You will pay a $20/day usage fee for bellmen, maid service,…whatever.
Customer service at the resort was very inconsistent. Some of the workers were very, very nice and helpful. Others didnt want to help you (they will ignore you) and were not very friendly. Check your bill. Unknown charges always show up and it is difficult to get them removed.
The Atlantis wants to sell you a timeshare and they have hawkers set up in every major lobby. They will tell you if you sit through a 90-minute presentation, you will receive $125/cash. They also take a $20 deposit. If you don’t show up for your presentation, you lose your $20/deposit. The timeshare presentation takes about 4-hours. At the end, you receive $125 in gift cerficates that are only 100% redeemable if you apply them to your bill. Smoking is allowed in hallways, lobbies, bars, restaurants, by the pools.
A great place if you have kids over 48-inches tall (the height requirement to ride their waterslides). Their waterpark is awesome. Try the Leap-of-Faith, The Abyss, and the Lazy River. None of the pools were crowded. The only negative is that the pools open at 10am and close at 5pm. Their beaches were very clean and almost unused when I was there. The ocean water is crystal clear. Lastly, if you like to walk, The Atlantis is a perfect place for you. From end-to-end (Beach Towers to The Cove), its maybe a 30-minute walk.
