Union Square San Francisco
The only hotel I can recommend is the Westin St. Francis. And that’s only because my sister looked into it. I’ve never stayed there myself. But Union Square isn’t a great place to stay. It’s crowded, traffic is horrible, and the only advantages are that you’re close to the Powell Street BART line, the cable car stop, and shopping. The cable car stop is a giant tourist roundup and shopping…well, you can find the same shops (like Macy’s, the Apple Store) just about anywhere else.

For the same price but no crowds, you could try the Omni Hotel. I’ve stayed there. Very plush, and it’s right off California Street, where you can still ride a cable car, but a less touristy one. Or for a slightly higher price but easier traffic, you might want to try Ghiradelli Square. It overlooks the Fisherman’s Wharf. You can stay at the Fairmont or Argonaut.
Here’s a tip for you: the Fairmont has fallen on hard times and are willing to negotiate their price. My sister has gotten rooms there for half off just by showing up and going right to the front desk. Or call them and see what price they’ll give you. But if you’re a real foodie, you might want to try something close to the Embarcadero, like the Hyatt, so you can try the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, or a hotel on Lombard Street, so you can try out the French and Italian restaurants, or Clement Street, so you can try out the Asian restaurants.
