Some Unusual Things to do in LA
Things to Do in Los Angeles:
Buy a Star Map off of a Hollywood Boulevard vendor
Learn to make sushi at the Venice Sushi Academy for $80 for the one-day basic course
.
Take the Hollywood Graveyard Tour (you get driven around in a hearse and see where a bunch of celebrities met their demise)
See a movie at Grauman’s Chinese
Visit the Queen Mary in Long Beach
Go on the “Inside Historic Downtown Los Angeles Walking Tour”
Go to Griffith Park for some hiking action, etc.
If you absolutely want to see a celebrity, go to the Virgin Music Store on Sunset Blvd. (cross street Crescent Heights) and have a cup of coffee and a pastry at the coffee shop that’s in the plaza (I forget what it’s called) and kick it for an hour or two to people-watch. I lived in Hollywood for 11 years and every single time I hung out there, I saw a celebrity. Every-single-time! Another fun place to people-watch is Melrose Avenue.
Take a walk down the Venice Beach boardwalk to meet some interesting characters. Hit the beach towns for the quintessential California experience (Santa Monica, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Newport Beach, etc.)
North of L.A., there’s Santa Barbara, a coastal town 100 miles up the 101 freeway (about a 2-hour drive). Stay a night and walk down State Street, which is the main drag with the shops, restaurants, etc.
Further up the coast is San Luis Obispo with the world-famous Madonna Inn which is horribly gaudy and campy. It’s fun to stay at for a night for a laugh, though their prices have come up a lot in recent years. Side note: paying $200+/night for a room done up in Pepto Bismol pink might not set the right tone for your honeymoon.
